Why We Make Appeasement To Water Spirits And Other Spirits

One major reason for appeasement is to restore peace between humans and the Spirits.

There is a saying in Igbo... "nwa mmuo emegbula nwa mmadu ma nwa mmadu emegbula nwa mmuo." Our ancestors understands very well that spirits inhabited this world prior to the appearance of human race and that is why these spirits and their subordinates are considered to be the true owners of the landscape in which humanity lives.

In the course of its developments, the human race caused sufferings to these spirit beings willingly and unwillingly, by clearing forests, polluting and damming rivers, changing the landscape, extracting minerals, mining and quarrying, burning various substances which act as a poison to non-human beings causing them illness, suffering and madness.

These beings retaliate by sending diseases, epidemics, earthquakes, floods, fires, madness, quarrels and so forth against humans, their crops and livestock. 

Ritual offerings (Appeasement) are made to the water spirits and other spirits to atone for human mistakes, repay our debts to them, purify and heal them, provide them with whatever they need, re-establish balance and harmony and turn them into friends and helpers who instead of harming humans will protect and benefit us. 

But one must be very careful when it comes to making offerings to water spirits. Things like blood, alcohol and certain types of incenses containing animal ingredients are never offered as they are believed to offend and pollute the water spirits, thereby making them irritated and unhappy causing them to retaliate by unleashing problems on the hapless offender.

A lot of people are victim to these when it comes to making offerings to water spirits. A good water spirit hate blood. That is why you don't kill the animals before throwing them inside the water. The animals must be giving to them alive.

But some will go there, kill something and then throw it inside the river. After that, the problem they made the sacrifice for will instead of being solved, increase.

This is the reason you must go with a spiritualist who will guide and help you. And always know the spirit behind the water you are going for appeasement.
